CAL POLY POMONA
GOLF CLUB EXPO
A GREAT DAY IN THE SUN: First off, the California State Polytechnic University at Pomona, was once a magnificent horse farm just outside of Los Angeles. It is now one of the premier polytechnic universities in our country. This event was our first mid-week on-campus tournament/expo designed to help build the schools
intramural golf club and recreational golf program.
To accomplish this goal, we set up a modified driving range and
short course right in the middle of campus. As a result, hundreds of students and faculty were able to step up and hit shots and experience golf...as they walked to class. This was the first step in proving that convenience is a huge element in getting new golfers involved. By the end of the event we had over 100 new students sign up for the golf club. Needless to say, that was huge.
This also was the first step in discovering how many 'dormant' golfers there really are on college campuses. It seems a lot of kids play for their high school golf teams or with their families as they grow up, but then move on to college and drop the sticks because they either don't have the time, money or ability to get to a traditional golf course...because most college kids don't have cars. So when we mentioned that they could now have 'Thursday night almostGolf' tournaments, they went nuts. Evening almostGolf is fast, one club, immediate and convenient golf. They are back in their dorms within an hour and a half. Who wouldn't be into that?
